Spergon Wynn, Jr. Obituary

Spergon Wynn, Jr., a devoted community servant, respected businessman, and noble Christian man, entered eternal rest after a life marked by faith, perseverance, and service.

Born on December 2, 1944, in Palestine, Texas, to Mr. Spergon Wynn, Sr. and Mrs. Mable Wynn, Spergon’s early years were shaped by the values of hard work and integrity. His family later moved to Galveston, where he was baptized at Carter Temple C.M.E. Church, a congregation he faithfully served throughout his life. Even as a youth, Spergon embodied diligence working downtown with the newspapers and shining shoes while attending high school.

A proud product of the Galveston public school system, Spergon graduated from the historic Central High School, Class of 1963. He distinguished himself both in the classroom and on the football field, leaving a lasting mark on his peers and teachers. His athletic journey continued at Lamar University in Beaumont, where he walked onto the practice field in 1964 as a non-scholarship player. Through determination and talent, he rose to become one of the Cardinals’ greatest offensive linemen. By the end of his collegiate career in 1967, he had earned numerous honors, including being named to the prestigious All-American Team. He was also recognized as All-Southland Conference in 1966 and 1967, the Cardinals’ Best Offensive Lineman in 1967, and later honored as part of the Southland Conference’s first all-decade team in 1973. In 1976, his legacy was cemented with induction into the Lamar University Cardinal Hall of Honor. Spergon earned his undergraduate degree at Lamar and went on to receive his law degree from Texas Southern Texas University in Houston.

His professional journey took him to New York, where he served diligently with the State of New York before returning to his beloved Galveston. It was there that he fell in love with the beautiful and vibrant Doreatha Lewis, who became the “apple of his eye” and his lifelong soulmate and business partner. Their love story culminated in marriage in 1997, and together they worked tirelessly to uplift their community. That same year, they purchased the old Green Funeral Home and celebrated the grand opening of Wynn Funeral Home. For nearly three decades, the funeral home has stood as a beacon of compassion, dignity, and love, faithfully living out its motto: “Our Family Servicing Your Family With Compassion, Dignity and Love.”

Faith was the cornerstone of Spergon’s life. He worshipped and served alongside his wife at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Galveston, where he was a devoted Sunday School teacher and Christian Youth Fellowship worker. His civic and community service was equally profound. He and Doreatha were Golden Life Members of the Galveston NAACP. He served as Vice President of the Galveston County-Gulf Coast Black Nurses Association, mentored youth through Community in Schools, and was a longtime member of the Coastal Funeral Directors and Morticians Association. Spergon also served as Field Director for the Galveston County Democratic Party, sponsored Hurricane Youth Sports, and generously supported countless local initiatives. Whenever there was a need in Galveston County, he could be counted on to assist especially for the forgotten and underserved.

Guided by his favorite scripture, “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” Matthew 6:33, Spergon lived a life of faith, service, and generosity. He will be remembered as a man of honorable character, an enterprising businessman, a caring and generous neighbor, and a respected friend and colleague. His life was a testament to faith, perseverance, and service. His legacy will continue to inspire his family for generations to come.
