Maria Johnson Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully entered eternal rest at the remarkable age of 100. Born on August 16, 1924, in Welsh, Louisiana, to Leonie and Oscar Johnson, Maria grew up with a strong faith, an unwavering spirit, and a heart full of love. After moving to Galveston, Texas, Maria built a life centered on family, community, and service. She was married to the late James Smith, with whom she shared a beautiful life filled with joy, resilience, and devotion. Together, they raised four children: Elizabeth Francois, Ann Vogel (Tyrone), Berman Smith, Calvin Smith, and stepson, James Smith Jr.
Maria leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom through her cherished grandchildren: Jason Smith (Ebony), Kisha Grissom (Daniel), Bridgette Smith-Lawson (Al), Korey Smith (Andriah), Kierra J. Klefas (Michael), Samuel Smith (Kahla), Sedrick Smith, Jouvannia Smith, and Shemona Smith, as well as her many great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving siblings: Hazel Simon, Shirley Hampton, Laurene L. Lafonte, Lourene Medlow, Marilyn Hamilton, and Marion Johnson.
Maria was preceded in death by her husband, James Smith, her son, Berman Smith, stepson, John Smith, brother, J.B. Johnson, and sisters - Eva Cal, Sylvia Cooper, and Beatrice Carter. Known for her grace, strength, and boundless compassion, Maria touched countless lives throughout her century of life.
Her family will remember her as the guiding light who brought them together with her warm smile and tender words. Maria's enduring love and wisdom will remain an everlasting source of inspiration for all who knew her.
Services celebrating Maria’s extraordinary life will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Galveston, Texas. Viewing will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Maria Johnson Smith’s legacy will live on in the hearts of her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love.
