George Simmons II, affectionately known as "Sundown" or "Butch," passed away on June 18, 2025. Born on September 17, 1950, in Galveston, Texas, he was the beloved son of Edward and Mary Lee Simmons. Rooted in strong values and faith, George found his spiritual foundation at Sunlight Baptist Church under the guidance of Reverend RL Davenport.
George’s life was marked by unwavering love and dedication to his family and community. He was a devoted husband to Karen Simmons and a proud father to George Simmons III (Kim), Jazzalyn McMurrin (Mike), Brandon Brown, Shamera Simmons, Amanda Brickhouse (James), Corey Johnson, Jerry Richards, and Trevin Chambers. His legacy continues through 28 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
Professionally, George wore many hats, working as a bus, taxi, and Uber driver, ferry conductor, Galveston County bailiff, and at Wynn Funeral Home. He passionately volunteered with Galveston Parks & Recreation, coaching youth basketball and baseball. In 2015, he joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church, serving proudly as an usher.
George is reunited in eternal rest with his parents and brothers Edward, Clarence, and Ronnie. He is survived by his loving wife, children, brothers Michael Simmons Sr. (Rochelle) and Floyd Simmons, brothers-in-law Ricky and Michael Johnson, and an extensive, loving family.
George Simmons II will be remembered for his radiant smile, generous heart, and the enduring impact he made on all who knew him.
