On September 12, 1929, the late Eli and Avia Edwards received a precious gift from God, whom they lovingly named Evelyn Edwards.

Evelyn was a devoted Catholic and faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She carried her faith with grace and lived a life filled with kindness, compassion, and devotion to God and others.

She had a love for music and dancing, especially Zydeco, blues, and old-time favorites. Evelyn was also known for her special gift in the kitchen, where she shared her love of cooking with family and friends. She cherished children dearly and lovingly babysat countless little ones throughout her life, creating bonds that will never be forgotten.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Eli and Avia Edwards; her husband, Ulyice C. Gonzales; two sons, Reginald R. Edwards and Albert L. Edwards; her brothers, Freal, Elcee, Wallace, and Walter Edwards; her sisters, Elzina, Evia, and Modest Edwards; her granddaughter, Renisha R. Edwards; and her beloved friends, Mary Jolivet, Leona Auzene, Alice Powell, and Jennie Kinlaw, along with other loved ones who welcomed her into eternal rest.

Evelyn leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering kindness. She is survived by her daughters: Doris Edwards (Dean), Mary Edwards, Cynthia Gonzales Collins (Darrell), Ozella Gonzales, and Pheneria Gonzales (Ivis); sons: Kevin Gonzales, Sylvester Gonzales and bonus son Tommy Johnson; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her favorite niece, Mary Edwards Anderson, and her dear friend, Annie George, who both held very special places in her heart. In addition, Evelyn is remembered and loved by a host of other relatives, neighbors, and friends.

Evelyn’s warm, charming, and lovable spirit touched everyone who knew her. On September 5, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at her residence, she peacefully gained her heavenly wings.

Evelyn will be laid to rest at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
