We honor the remarkable life of Dr. Caryl L. Carter Wilson, a fierce, no-nonsense, beautiful soul whose legacy of service, strength, and love will forever live on in our hearts.
She was born on November 15, 1949, in Houston, Texas, to John E. and Joyce E. Carter. She lived a life marked by faith, excellence, and fierce determination. Young Caryl’s faith bloomed early, setting the foundation for a lifetime of compassionate service. She was baptized at Lane Tabernacle Methodist Church. She later became a devoted member of Hope Church Pearland. She sang joyfully in the choir and poured her heart into the Pearls Ministry and Outreach Ministry where she served faithfully, extended hope and healing throughout the community.
Caryl’s passion for education and leadership showed early on as a vibrant scholar. She graduated from Fidelity Manor High School in 1967, where she was a dynamic force. She sang in the choir, led the Spanish, Art, and Future Teachers Clubs. She was also an Honor Society member, excelled in drama, and served as Student Council President, Senior Class President, and Miss Fidelity 1966–1967. She was a proud Pantherette and loved by all.
In 1971, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the historic Spelman College, majoring in Spanish and minoring in secondary education. A trailblazer, she continued her academic journey, earning her master’s in education from the University of Houston in 1987. She began shaping young minds and systems as Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction in Galena Park ISD and was later accepted into UH’s doctoral program in 1989.
In 1993, Dr. Wilson took the helm as Principal of La Marque High School, where she made her mark as a bold, passionate, and deeply respected leader. That same year, she was selected for the Harvard Summer Institute at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, a testament to her national recognition as an educational powerhouse.
In June 1996, Caryl Wilson graduated summa cum laude from La Salle University with a Doctor of Philosophy in Education. The following year, she left La Marque High School to assume her final role as principal at Clear Brook High School, where her vision and dedication shaped the students and the school community from June 1997 until her retirement in 2008.
Dr. Wilson was strong-willed, generous, courageous, and resilient. She believed in her students… all of them and worked tirelessly in the community to make sure they had every opportunity to succeed. She was a boss in every sense of the word, walking with grace and commanding every room with her sharp wit, classic beauty, and unmatched determination. She didn’t just “talk the talk”, she walked it with purpose and poise. As she’d often say: “Because I said so.” She was a jewel among us...her brilliance touched generations.
On the personal side, she was deeply proud of her greatest accomplishments in the form of her two beautiful daughters: Jonetta Nicole (Nikki) and Kristi Michelle, born in 1971 and 1977, respectively completing her family’s joy. She poured into them the same love, strength, and passion she poured into everything she did.
On April 5, 2000, Caryl married Robert “Roger” Wilson, the love of her life. Their union was defined by unwavering devotion, as it served as a testament to lasting partnership. Together they enjoyed traveling, dancing, and creating unforgettable moments with their children, grandchildren, family, and cherished friends. Their inseparable bond radiated warmth and joy, inspiring everyone fortunate enough to witness their enduring love.
